Warehousing – What Are Its Characteristics and Benefits?

In the logistics industry, " warehousing " refers to the storage of goods that will later be sold or distributed. The term is often used interchangeably with "distribution center" or "fulfillment center, " but these two are not the same.

A warehouse is simply a storage facility; in contrast, a distribution center or fulfillment provider also handles order picking and order processing, often including transportation. Inventory is stored in specially designed warehouses, which can be rented. This means that companies such as manufacturers, retailers, and wholesalers do not need to manage their own inventory.

Every warehouse is typically equipped with an advanced warehouse management system (WMS) that manages the flow of goods within the facility. This system provides real-time information on inventory, such as stock levels, warehouse location, incoming orders, packaging details, shipping information, and more. Warehousing is often chosen by companies that lack their own storage space or to reduce costs; they do not need to invest in staff or a physical location. It also offers convenience to the customer by taking over the tasks of storage, inventory management, order picking, and transportation, allowing the customer to focus on the company’s core business activities.
